EastEnders Star Reveals Undergoing Double Mastectomy
EastEnders actress Kara Tointon took it to her Instagram recently and shared the big news with her friends and fans. She posted a video and opened up about how her mother passed away, seven years ago because of ovarian cancer.
The actress further revealed that she has had her double mastectomy done and has had both of her fallopian tubes removed. She wrote, “This is personal, but important. I am sharing with you my journey with the BRCA1 gene.”
Tointon explained that she is a BRCA gene 1 and 2 carrier. Which means she is at high risk of getting both breast and ovarian cancer. She further added that when her mother was tested for ovarian cancer, she was also asked to get a genetics test done. Kara revealed that her family has a history of both cancers.
“It was put to us, we took the test, and it was confirmed that my mum and I both carried the gene,” she added. The soap star further continued and added that at that time she was pregnant with her first child. She knew she wanted more children, so she met various NHS to become informed and to understand all her options.
Kara Shares Details About Her Surgery
Kara then added that after giving birth to her second son in 2021, she felt her family was complete. And then she decided to go through two major surgeries last year. One was a double mastectomy, and the other one was a two-part protector study, a trial.
“They believe that ovarian cancer begins in the fallopian tubes, so by removing them first and checking you out, you can remove the ovaries later,” she added. Kara concluded the video by saying that it wasn’t an easy decision, but she is happy that she took it and is ready to speak about it.
“I wanted to talk about it because hearing other people’s experiences helped so much, and knowledge is power; communication is key; getting to know our bodies, our cycles, is only a good thing, but I’ll be talking about this a lot more.” “It is about understanding, choices and taking control. “Hope this helps someone out there. Embrace the power of knowledge,” she wrote and ended the caption. For more such EastEnders updates and spoilers, keep reading Soap Opera Daily.
