Shaun Williamson, popularly known as Barry Evans recently spoke about the original plan of his character’s death on the BBC One soap. Long-time viewers remember Evans for playing paramedic for ten long years on the longest-running show.
Williamson’s character met his fate twenty years ago after Janine Butcher pushed him off a cliff. But in a shocking twist, Shaun revealed that his alter ego was never supposed to actually die. Whatt?? Shocking right!
While speaking to The Sun about his iconic death scene, the 58-year-old actor said he had decided to leave Walford. Before he made this decision, Janine was originally supposed to be killed by Barry on Valentine’s Day that year.

He explained, “Barry was originally supposed to end Janine on Valentine’s Day that year. But then I’d decided I wanted to leave after being there for 10 years. They [producers] then re-wrote scripts and flipped things around so that I would die instead.”
This shocking revelation came into light after Shaun revealed that he’s reprising his role for EastEnders 40th anniversary as a ghost. The BBC One soap is bringing many legendary characters back and amid this, a ghost appearance was a must. In addition to Shaun, viewers will soon see Michael French coming back as David Wicks for a short stint later this year.
Along with Wicks, Jane Beale & Chrissie Watts are also making their way to Walford. With EastEnders celebrating its milestone, fans can expect more explosive comebacks in the coming months.
