It’s been sometime since Tom King has been relentlessly abusing Belle Dingle. And to date, there’s no relief in sight. The show has boldly tackled themes of physical abuse and coercive control. In an exclusive interview, Laura Shaw, the soap producer, gave us a sneak peek into the future of this storyline.
The maker explained that Belle was chosen for the storyline because they had known her for years. Also, her supportive network of family and friends around her makes her a suitable choice as someone who can reach out for help. She labelled Belle as the ‘girl next door.’
Revealing the storyline’s duration, Shaw pointed out that domestic abuse is not resolved quickly. Hence, it will continue until the end of the year. When asked if they had always known how they planned to end the story, Laura Shaw revealed they had a clear idea from the beginning. However, a few new twists and turns have been added.
Regarding whether villagers like Cain, Vinny, and Wendy would begin to realise what was happening, Shaw said that while people might start to observe, they won’t fully grasp the situation. Meanwhile, Jimmy might fail to understand Tom’s evil side because of their close bond.
Additionally, Laura acknowledged that the show had received complaints regarding Tom’s mistreatment of Piper, the dog. However, the soap boss assured that Piper would continue to play a role. She added, “This is all based on research—I promise you that it’s not just us being mean to the dog for the sake of it.”

The show producer admitted they had been closely monitoring the audience’s reaction. She expressed, “I think the audience reaction has been phenomenal.” She mentioned they received numerous letters and comments from women and men sharing their experiences.
However, Laura confessed that reading these accounts could be upsetting. However, they depict that they are achieving their goal of empowering people to speak out. According to her, viewers can expect Tom to continue manipulating and exerting control over Belle in the coming episodes.
