It seems like the cobbles is gearing up for a major comeback and planning to bring back a blast from thepast. The Maureen actor has already been a part of the soap for almost thirty years before leaving in 2025. But in which storyline is she planning to come back.
Maureen Eyes Return To Coronation Street
It’s been nearly three decades since Sherrie Hewson last appeared on Coronation Street as Maureen Webster, but the actress has made one thing very clear; she’s more than ready to step back in. Maureen, who first became known through her relationship with supermarket manager Reg Holdsworth, quickly became a memorable part of the street.
Over time, her storyline expanded as she married fan-favourite Fred Elliott and later Bill Webster, tying her firmly into one of Corrie’s most well-known families.
Her departure in 1997 marked the end of an era, as Maureen left Weatherfield behind to start a new life in Germany with Bill. But despite the long gap, Sherrie hasn’t distanced herself from the show. In fact, she recently admitted she still keeps up with it and holds deep affection for her time there.
Speaking about her experience, Sherrie shared, “I loved every second of Coronation Street. It was a wonderful show to be part of.” She added that she still watches it and didn’t hesitate to say she would return “in a heartbeat.”
The Storyline That Could Bring Maureen Back
Fans are excited for this potential comeback because Sherrie already has a storyline in mind and it ties directly into Maureen’s past. She pointed out that Maureen is still very much alive within the show’s universe and remains connected to the Webster family.
After marrying Bill Webster, Kevin Webster’s father, Maureen moved to Germany but that doesn’t mean her ties to Weatherfield were ever fully cut.Sherrie explained that Maureen could realistically return to stake her claim in the family business. Since Bill once owned the garage, she believes her character may still have a share in it.
That opens the door for a dramatic return, with Maureen potentially coming back to demand what she’s owed. As she put it, Kevin might even owe her a portion of the garage and sets up a storyline packed with tension, family conflict, and classic Corrie drama.
While Sherrie clearly feels a strong pull toward the cobbles, she also spoke candidly about the realities of working in long-running soaps. She reflected on how uncertain soap careers can be, advising actors to treat each contract as temporary. According to her, landing another year on a show is always a bonus, not a guarantee.
“You’re very lucky if they go, we like this character, we’ll write for this character, and we’ll keep this character,” she explained, calling it a blessing. Despite her eventual exit, Sherrie made it clear that she valued her time on the show deeply. She admitted she felt “terribly sad” to leave and say goodbye to the cast and crew, but she also understood that storylines naturally come to an end.
