Fans of the General Hospital can agree that Sonny’s latest meltdown has been cooking for a while. Interestingly, it finally reached a boiling point on the May 17 episode! Maurice Benard, aka Sonny, chatted with fans on social media about his character’s dramatic spiral.
Despite his recent penchant for throwing punches, Sonny hasn’t broken his hand yet. Viewers already know that first, he beat Cyrus senselessly, then thrashed his former mob lieutenant, Dex. What’s next for the man? Find out!
General Hospital: Maurice is Overwhelmed by Fan Love!
General Hospital character Valentin now controls the defense contracting company Pikeman. The man had a pharmacist tamper with Sonny’s bipolar medication, significantly lowering his dose. He did it all just because Sonny refused to do business with them. This scheme, which has been brewing for months, prompted Sonny to feel betrayed by everyone close to him.
Subsequently, he pushed all his friends and family away. Thankfully, Jason intervened and stopped Sonny from killing Dex, but his daughter Kristina walked in at the worst possible moment. The woman shattered her image of him, leading Jason to call Sonny’s ex, Carly. Soon, she managed to calm Sony down despite Sonny feeling guilty about his actions.
General Hospital fans praised the brilliant performances all around. On May 21, the Sonny actor thanked fans and the show on X/Twitter. Benard expressed gratitude for continuing the conversation about mental health, a topic he’s passionate about. “Thanks to] the writers for understanding bipolar. So many great performances. We put a lot of hard work into what we do.”
General Hospital: Fans Love Bernard’s Portrayal!
Likewise, fans gave back the love by saying Benard’s portrayal of Sonny on General Hospital has helped raise awareness about mental health issues. Laura Wright chimed in with, “Big love Mo. xoxo.” We can’t find a single follower of Maurice who hasn’t lauded him for his acting and the powerful storyline. However, a few fans had concerns. Check out!
One wrote on X/Twitter, “People off their medications don’t necessarily go around hitting people and being out of control.” They believe this was the WRONG message to send. Bernard agreed, but he explained that someone like Sonny, who’s volatile and is drinking and manic. Additionally, he noted that Sonny’s thoughts are [taking] him over, it could definitely happen. “Like I said, bipolar ain’t pretty,” Maurice added.
Meanwhile, another fan accused Benard of trying to grab another Emmy. Benard replied, “Believe me, that’s not true at all. I’m absolutely cool with the Emmys I have.” The soap actor believes he doesn’t need to convince anyone of anything. “I really do love the mental health talk [which is] worth more than any Emmy,🎁” Maurice added.
You can’t please everyone, but we believe Maurice hit a home run with his portrayal of an out-of-control Sonny. Do you agree? Tell us in the comments. And keep reading Soap Opera Daily for more exclusive General Hospital celeb updates!
I can appreciate the need to educate people on mental health issues but this story has gone on way too long. If Bernard wants the spotlight for bipolar then end it on GH and devote more resources and attention on his podcast. GH has covered his illness in the past so stop the repeated stories. The long drawn out stories are drowning GH fallen ratings. Fans are tired of this story.
He can act it, he lived it! So shut up naysayers
