Rebecca Breeds may have left Summer Bay years ago, but her Home and Away past has a way of catching up with her. In her brand-new film Kangaroo Island, the actress steps into an entirely different role, yet the story still manages to carry a few cheeky nods to her soap opera days. Fans of Ruby Buckton will be surprised to learn just how closely some of these references mirror her old storylines, and how much fun Rebecca had spotting them.

Memories of Summer Bay Resurfaced

Rebecca became a household name on Home and Away as Ruby, a character who went through more than her fair share of drama. While filming Kangaroo Island, she found herself reminded of those days thanks to an unexpected moment in the script. She explained that writer Sally Gifford had created an opening scene where her character is recognised from a soap but not an Australian one.

HAA/ Rebecca’s new role

The script called her “Sasha, the tyre slasher,” which instantly rang a bell for Rebecca. She remembered pointing out that Ruby once slashed tyres on the soap. Rebecca admitted she laughed at the coincidence, especially when she learned Sally had no idea about Ruby’s past. She said it felt like fate, and that it was rare for a character to be labelled a tyre slasher.

Home and Away: Easter Eggs Hidden in the Film

The first reference may have been accidental, but the second was written with clear intent. As family tensions rise in the movie, Auntie Rosie blurts out, “There’s more drama than Home and Away.” Rebecca shared that the line was obviously included on purpose and admitted it made her laugh. She said the comparison felt fair, given how much drama has always unfolded in Summer Bay. Still, she stressed that while the film contains plenty of conflict, its family story remains grounded and real.

Beyond the Easter eggs, Kangaroo Island carries a heartfelt story. The film follows Lou, a South Australian woman who once left home to chase her Hollywood dreams. After a series of bad choices and unexpected turns, she finds herself back in Australia. Rebecca described the project as a “love letter to Australia.” Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more Home and Away news, stories, and behind-the-scenes insights.
