An iconic Home and Away chapter is silently reaching its last page. Summer Bay favourite Irene Roberts, played by soap legend Lynne McGranger, is set to bid farewell after 33 unforgettable years. And although the show has not formally announced her exit storyline yet, Lynne recently revealed a low-key hint fans need to look out for.
A Flu, a Farewell… and a Clue?
In an interview last week on Hope’s breakfast radio program, Lynne revealed that she contracted a bad flu just as she was finishing up her last scenes. Her sickness reached its peak the day after finishing, but by then it had already started to play havoc with her voice during filming.
Due to this, she joked that long-term viewers may be able to spot something’s wrong in those pivotal episodes. She said that fans would likely notice when the end is close, quipping that they’ll notice her voice breaking and will think, “what’s happening to Irene?”
The Scene That Made Everyone Cry in Home and Away
Although her goodbye episode is kept secret, Lynne confirmed that she actually did film her last scene with Ada Nicodemou, who plays Leah. It wasn’t dramatic in any way, just Irene passing over a coffee, but there were high emotions. As Lynne tells it, Ada was “a blubbering mess for weeks,” although the scene itself was quite mundane.
As for the plot, it seems Lynne had a significant role to play in her departure. After years of her humorous pitches being eye-rolled by writers, they listened. She revealed that she came up with the idea and pitched it to the team, and to her surprise, they adored it.
While the official storyline is still a secret, recent scenes have already been fuelling speculation among fans. Most think that hints in Irene’s actions might be a sign of something tragic, potentially a health issue.
