Humiliation for Coronation Street and Emmerdale as EastEnders Wins BIG!

By Roy

The glitzy return of the British Soap Awards was a night of triumph for some, and heartbreak for others, especially Coronation Street. As Jane McDonald took the stage at London’s Hackney Empire, one thing became clear: not every soap would be going home with gold.

EastEnders Steals the Show

BBC’s EastEnders dominated the evening, bagging a whopping eight awards during its landmark 40th anniversary. The live anniversary episode, featuring Anita Dobson’s return as Angie Watts and Martin Fowler’s heartbreaking death, helped the soap scoop up Best British Soap. Lacey Turner won Best Leading Performer for her emotional portrayal of Stacey Slater. Meanwhile, the gripping scene where Angie made her surprise comeback was crowned Scene of the Year.

Steve McFadden picked up Best Dramatic Performance for Phil Mitchell, although he didn’t attend the event. Over in the on-screen duo category, EastEnders snatched Best Partnership too, with Patrick and Yolande beating Corrie’s beloved Swarla. The Walford soap also claimed Best Comedy Performance and Villain of the Year, sealing its place as the night’s undisputed winner.

Coronation Street Struggle to Compete

Over on ITV, things weren’t quite as cheerful. Coronation Street went home empty-handed in every panel and viewer-voted category, only managing to secure a single honour: Outstanding Achievement, awarded to David Neilson for his unforgettable portrayal of Roy Cropper. The award was presented by Julie Hesmondhalgh, who played his on-screen wife Hayley.

Emmerdale didn’t fare much better, picking up just two gongs. Amelia Flanagan won Best Young Performer, while long-serving Mike Plant was honoured with the Tony Warren Award.

With the soap set to cut 30 minutes in 2026, the change might be needed both on and off screen. Fans can catch all the wins, speeches, and surprises when the awards ceremony airs this Thursday evening on ITV.
