General Hospital fans were stunned on June 5, 2025, when Lucky Spencer’s sudden exit storyline unfolded. His emotional proposal to Elizabeth Baldwin ended in heartbreak, sparking immediate buzz. Now, Jonathan Jackson opens up about why he left General Hospital so soon after his long-awaited comeback.
Why Jonathan Jackson Walked Away from General Hospital Again
Jonathan Jackson returned to General Hospital in August 2024 after a near-decade-long absence. His comeback had fans cheering, especially with Lucky reuniting with his mother Laura and sister Lulu. Yet just nine months later, Jackson has exited the role again—leaving viewers heartbroken and curious.
The Emmy-winning actor revealed the real reason behind his exit in a new interview. It wasn’t drama, creative differences, or contract disputes—it was family. Jackson lives in Nashville, Tennessee, while General Hospital films in Los Angeles. The constant back-and-forth began to wear him down.
Jackson shared that the “experiment” of splitting time between two coasts wasn’t sustainable. With three children and a wife—former GH actress Lisa Vultaggio—Jackson decided to prioritize home. Though he tried to strike a balance, he admitted, “We gave it our best shot, but we weren’t able to keep it going.”
General Hospital: Inside Lucky’s Final Goodbye Scene
Writers quickly pivoted to craft Lucky’s exit arc after Jackson gave notice. His last scenes aired the week of June 9–13, 2025. Elizabeth turned down Lucky’s proposal, pointing out he wouldn’t be happy settling in Port Charles. Lucky agreed and made the tough call to leave.
The farewell was bittersweet. Lucky bid emotional goodbyes to Laura, Lulu, Aiden, and even Liz—his longtime love. While his departure felt abrupt, it mirrored Jackson’s own sudden choice. There was no massive blowout or tragedy, just a quiet, emotional goodbye that honored the character’s roots.
A Comeback Filled with Nostalgia, Not Storylines
Though fans were thrilled by Jackson’s return, many felt Lucky never got the storyline he deserved. His time in town mostly centered on family catch-ups, not high-stakes drama. Still, Jackson called it a “sweet and meaningful” run, especially reconnecting with co-star Rebecca Herbst.
He reflected on their scenes together, praising Herbst’s talent and calling their time on set “a joy.” Jackson also enjoyed working again with Genie Francis and Maurice Benard, plus first-time scenes with Kate Mansi.
Now that his GH chapter is closed again, Jackson is turning to music and poetry. He plans to release a solo album and a book of poems in 2025. Though he’s stepping back from acting for now, he left the door open for a future return.
Jonathan Jackson’s latest General Hospital exit may not be permanent—but it was heartfelt. Fans will surely miss Lucky Spencer, though Jackson’s choice to focus on family and creative passions is understandable. They didn’t utilize his great talent. I always loved his character and hoped he would return someday. I understand his reason for leaving both the show and LA. I will miss him, yet again, but wish him well.
Jonathan Jackson – WE ALL WISH AND PRAY FOR THE VERY BEST FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!! ALSO, OUR HEARTFELT GOOD LUCK! As longtime and loyal viewers, it’s been a real joy to see you return as the original Lucky Spencer. Your talent continues to shine, and it’s truly disappointing that Frank Valentini and his team of writers didn’t know how to make the most of your return. Honestly, what was the point of Lucky Spencer’s big comeback? It felt hollow, and I can’t blame you one bit for stepping away early. General Hospital just isn’t the same fun, fabulous soap it once was—not through any fault of the amazing cast, but due to the leadership and writing that just doesn’t live up to the show’s legacy. Does anyone else remember ABC’s iconic “Love in the Afternoons”? That era was pure magic. Frank Valentini doesn’t come close to the brilliance of past executive producers like Gloria Monty, who—with her visionary writing team—created unforgettable television. And while I’m on this soapbox (pun intended), who in their right mind cancelled One Life to Live and All My Children back in 2011/2012? And why hasn’t anyone had the Good Sense to bring them back and steer this genre back on course? PLEASE—bring back our soaps! And for the love of daytime drama, fix GH—the last one standing! P.S. Sending love and prayers to all the General Hospital actors—both the veterans and the newer faces. You’re all appreciated more than you know. With love, Steven and John 🤗👍🥰✌️🌹🏳️🌈
Totally agree with Miss Scarlett. The writers really blew it. ..I can certainly see why Jackson would choose to opt for family over GH after the very lame storyline they gave him! Too bad! Fans were so excited about his return.
Bye for now Lucky , you’ll be missed. Always loved the lucky , Elizabeth story . Good luck and god bless in your future endeavours. Go Nashville!
Until we see you again ❤️
