Before Meghan Markle became a duchess with a chic style, she was just another Hollywood struggler. She had big dreams but a “small closet,” but that changed when she landed a role in the 2011 legal drama Suits. Harry’s wife discussed her early days on the latest episode of her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder. Dive in to get the lowdown!
Meghan Markle: Meg Recalls the Struggle Behind the Glam
Meghan Markle was grinding through auditions and living in a modest rental before Suits happened. She rose to fame for her role as Rachel Zane, who was part of the show from the get-go. However, the Duchess quit Suits after her engagement with Prince Harry in 2017.
Recently, she chatted with Cassandra Thurswell, the founder of Kitsch, about her pre-fame era. And guess what? The ladies go way back, and it was Markle’s friend Heather who introduced her to Cassandra. She recommended Cas to help the royal in styling, and that’s when Harry’s wife dropped the bombshell.
“Do you remember that closet door was within the bathroom?“ she asked her guest. Thurswell replied, “Meghan, we’ll call it a bungalow; we’ll be chic.” It cracked the princess up, and she didn’t miss a beat in glamourizing her old place for laughs. Markle described it as a “bungalow,” which required a person to walk past everything from bed to sink to reach the closet.
The last stop was the toilet, which faced the door that opened into her very small closet. She explained, “This was pre-Suits for me. I remember going through things thinking, there’s a couple of staples that you need.” Furthermore, the Duchess made a big fashion investment that might not seem a big deal now.
Meg’s Lucky Charm REVEALED
A few days after their first meeting, Cassandra called her, saying she found a great pair of flats. It was black patent leather Louboutin wedge flats which cost $200 (£149). Of course, the price tag made her panic. Meg shared, “I remember going, ‘that’s as much as I pay – I cannot.'”
That’s when Thurswell assured that she’d be wearing the pair a lot. “Do you know what’s so funny? Of course I wore those shoes until the red wore out,“ Markle revealed. Moreover, she even wore them on her final audition for Suits, and they became her lucky charm.
She had no idea that this late August morning of 2011 would change her life. Markle remembered, “Suits stole my heart. It’s the Goldilocks of my acting career—where finally I was just right.“ Meanwhile, the series landed on Netflix in 2023, resulting in 57 billion minutes of streaming time.
