Meghan Markle got in some legal trouble regarding her latest lifestyle brand, As Ever. Her passion project was this close to taking off, but an obstacle popped up that she could have easily avoided. It turns out the Duchess of Sussex forgot to sign an important trademark document. She must have skipped the signature due to all the excitement ahead of the big launch. So, what’s next for the brand?
Meghan Markle: Meghan’s Brand Faces Trademark Delay
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office didn’t spare Meghan Markle for her little signature goof-up. The Post reported that officials sent the paperwork back, requesting more clarity on what exactly Markle meant by “various items.” After all, the category could include anything from spoons and jams to a tea set.
Meanwhile, this isn’t Meghan’s first paperwork snafu, and she has a history of trademark troubles. A few years ago, she ran into a similar issue with her now-dead lifestyle blog, The Tig. Then, her short-lived Spotify podcast, Archetypes, also attracted legal complications. A little proofreading might have preserved her skin in all the cases.
Despite all these issues, Prince Harry’s wife insists she’s not panicky. “There are tons of twists and turns, even with the name,” Markle told People. She was referring to how she had to rebrand her business from American Riviera Orchard to As Ever. The reason? Trademark conflicts. “I was figuring it out in real-time,” Meghan admitted.
More Trouble For As Ever?
Nevertheless, the Duchess appreciates the “grace” people have given her while she learns the ropes. But a missing signature isn’t the only issue As Ever faces currently. Their name is strikingly similar to ASEVER, a Chinese clothing brand. The Trademark Office rejected Markle’s request to use the name for apparel.
They believed it could cause confusion. Hold up, there’s more! A Spanish politician claimed that Meghan’s brand logo looks like the coat of arms of Porreres, a tiny Mallorcan village. But Meghan is avoiding the red tape because she can’t afford to slow down at this point. She has a lot on her plate!
As Ever will sell an array of artisanal goods, including Meghan’s signature raspberry jam, wildflower honey, and herbal teas. Have you seen her using these products on her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan? Whatever happens, Markle remains focused on making her lifestyle dream a success.
