Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts are proving they’re not just Hollywood stars but also staunch supporters of the British royal family. Cruise recently joined the Royal Box at Wimbledon. Meanwhile, Roberts, alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, gave Kate a standing ovation. This public backing contrasts Hollywood’s cooling relationship with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. It’s clear that while Hollywood may have its favourites, the winds of celebrity favour are shifting.
Hollywood Backs Up The Royals
Recently, Tom Cruise happily played second fiddle to Kate, the Princess of Wales. And in 2022, the actor took a supporting role at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, where the real star was the late Queen at her Platinum Jubilee. Well, this proves even the biggest stars like Cruise know when to let the royals shine.
This week, Tom Cruise was back at Wimbledon, sitting in the third row of the royal box for the men’s finals. At the event, Princess Kate made a brief return to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis announcement.
Her arrival caused a buzz, with Cruise, Julia Roberts, Benedict Cumberbatch, and the 15,000-strong crowd giving Kate a standing ovation. The Wimbledon scene highlights a trend of celebrities backing Team Crown.
‘The Tide Has Turned’
Meanwhile, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan, seem to be experiencing a chilly reception from Tinseltown. A Hollywood insider told the Times, “The tide has turned.” They added that Americans are starting to feel differently about the royal couple.
While many have been friendly, there’s growing frustration over how they’ve treated the late Queen and the current king. It seems most people either dislike the Sussexes or are indifferent to them. Elsewhere, in London, ‘Avengers’ star Idris Elba attended a mini-summit at St. James’ Palace with the king to discuss youth crime.
They also brought in the somewhat inexperienced Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Elba has been working with the King’s Trust (formerly the Prince’s Trust) through his Elba Hope Foundation. Despite once being closely connected with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, he was recently seen with the king.
Meanwhile, Gwyneth Paltrow, who dined with the Sussexes last year alongside Cameron Diaz and Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, expressed her delight on Instagram over Princess Kate’s Trooping the Colour appearance. She posted, “So happy to see you looking so happy and well!”
Are Meghan & Harry Losing Their Allies?
Trooping the Colour was a huge success, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Drew Barrymore, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Emily Ratajkowski, and Kate Moss all dressed to impress for a black-tie charity gala. They helped raise over $2 million for the King’s Trust.
Edward Enninful, former British Vogue editor-in-chief and co-chair of the event, previously invited Meghan to guest-edit the magazine in 2019. Enninful also praised the king in Time’s 100 Most Influential People list last year, calling him ‘charming,’ ‘funny,’ and noted his ‘kindness.’
When the Sussexes arrived in the U.S., Oprah Winfrey was one of their biggest supporters. But their last public appearance together was at a charity event last October. Oprah hasn’t mentioned Meghan’s new lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, or followed its Instagram account.
Similarly, other big names from the Sussexes’ wedding, like David Beckham, haven’t been seen with them recently. Despite this, the Sussexes may still keep up with these celebrities privately. This year, unlike last, Harry and Meghan haven’t been seen at star-studded events.
Perhaps they’re just craving some quiet nights at home with their young children, charity work, TV projects, and Netflix commitments. Meanwhile, their docuseries received zero Emmy nominations. Can they make their Hollywood comeback soon? Only time will tell! Till then, keep checking Soap Opera Daily for more royal family updates! What are your opinions on this situation?
