An unearthed letter has shed light on the late Queen’s views regarding Prince Harry and Meghan’s security situation post-Megxit. After the couple resigned as frontline royals, they bid adieu to various royal privileges, including the automatic police security in the United Kingdom. The Duke of Sussex has been candid about his frustrations around the same and launched a legal challenge against the Home Office to try and get it back.

While Harry is fighting his security removal case, in a separate legal case, he is involved in a letter written on behalf of his late grandmother. Despite her reported disappointment in the couple, the Queen directed her chief advisor to ensure Harry and Meghan had effective security. The revelations come via a newly unsealed letter Her late Majesty wrote to her private secretary, Sir Edward Young, in early 2020.
The letter read, ‘You will understand well that ensuring that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain safe is of paramount importance to Her Majesty and her family.’ He also added that the Duke was born into a royal family and the Duchess has an independent profile, but there is a well-documented history of targeting of Sussexes by extremists, so the family should be provided with security.

Sir Edward’s letter also noted that the Queen was well aware, however, that RAVEC would make their final decision on Harry and Meghan’s security independently, after making it clear how important the late monarch felt it was that they continued to receive adequate protection.
An extract of the letter per The Metro was handed down in a judgement from Mr. Justice Nicklin in a libel case Harry brought against Associated Newspapers limited over an article by the Mail on Sunday published in 2022.
