Sarah Platt is about to realize Todd Grimshaw is dealing with more than grief in Coronation Street. A tense money conversation puts Todd’s troubles on display, and Sarah starts seeing signs that point to abuse. Theo Silverton’s behavior has already pushed Todd into isolation, and this upsetting situation places Sarah in the position to notice the truth.
Sarah Begins To Notice The Warning Signs
Todd Grimshaw has struggled ever since the tragic death of Billy Mayhew. Billy became Todd’s confidante, and Todd trusted him enough to admit that Theo had put him through humiliation, control, and violence.
That support helped Todd build courage to leave. However, Billy died in the Corriedale crash after Theo Silverton left him trapped in the wreckage. That loss hit Todd hard because he lost both someone he loved and the person helping him escape abuse.
As a result, Theo stepped back into Todd’s life as the “supportive” partner while actually tightening his control. Executive producer Kate Brooks explained that Todd now feels trapped and emotionally drained. She said Todd had prepared to leave but still felt terrified.
He confided in Billy without fully understanding how serious the abuse had become. Meanwhile, guilt now weighs heavily on him. Todd believes Billy might still be alive if that conversation never happened, and Theo uses that guilt to keep Todd dependent.
Control Turns Financial As Theo Tightens His Grip
Theo also knows he left Billy to die, and that truth haunts him. Someone even overheard him sobbing and confessing to Billy’s body before the funeral. Still, guilt has not changed his behavior. Instead, it has increased his need to keep Todd close.
Brooks shared that Theo grows more manipulative as time passes. Todd leans on him for support, and Theo presents himself as the person keeping him afloat. He even appears helpful to Summer and George, which makes his behavior harder for others to question.
Appearances look good on the outside, yet Todd deals with a very different reality at home. Trouble escalates after Billy’s funeral. Theo grabbed attention and used the eulogy to push blame toward Todd, which angered him. Soon after, financial abuse began. Theo pressures Todd to cut up his credit cards and pushes for a joint bank account so he can monitor spending. He claims it helps Todd, but it really gives him control. A visit to his mum in Doncaster then leaves Todd almost penniless and struggling to buy food.
Summer Spellman notices Todd’s empty fridge and offers to do a food shop. Todd feels embarrassed, yet he accepts because he has little choice. Desperation shows again when he secretly leaves Theo a voicemail admitting he has run out of money. Then Sarah Platt arrives to remind Todd that he owes her son Harry Platt £10 for a sponsored walk. Todd snaps at her over the reminder, and his reaction makes it clear that pressure is building on him. Realisation could come soon, and Sarah may become the one person who finally recognises that Todd is facing abuse and needs help. Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more Coronation Street spoilers.
