In a candid interview with TIME magazine, pop icon Selena Gomez opened up about the importance of friendship. Surprisingly, Taylor Swift doesn’t make Selena’s closest friends list. The 31-year-old singer also revealed her criteria for choosing her friends. And get this: Gomez didn’t mince words while sharing her honest take on female friendships. She declared it might be a “cliché, but girls are mean.” Check it out below!
The Same Old Love singer talked about the social dynamics, saying it’s tough to be in the cool girl’s area. She added, “I’m just kind of like there. I don’t know where I’m meant to belong.” Additionally, Selena emphasized that her closest pals don’t care about her fame. The Only Murder in the Building star revealed her inner circle, which includes a casting director, a producer, and a real estate agent.
Interestingly, none of them are global pop stars. Gomez explained, “I love having level-headed people around that couldn’t give two f-ks about what I do.” Furthermore, the singer-actress touched on her feelings of loneliness. “You could be in a crowd of people and still feel alone. I still deal with that.” The Single Soon singer admitted that the loneliness still lingers even if one distracts himself and denies it. She added, “I just allow myself to have those days.”
No mention of Taylor Swift? Although she’s a part of Taylor Swift’s elite circle, Taylor couldn’t make it to the cut. The duo, who often hype each other up on social media, have maintained a 15-year friendship in the entertainment industry. In her Apple TV documentary, My Mind and Me, Gomez called Swift her only “real friend” in the industry. Earlier, she told Rolling Stone, “I never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities.”
Gomez felt that everyone around her was leading a fulfilling life. She wondered, “I had this position, and I was really happy, but was I?” Most notably, the former Disney star featured in Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video alongside other famous friends like Zendaya and Karlie Kloss. Later in the interview, Selena confessed that she was considering adopting a child at 35 before meeting Benny Blanco.
The pop queen reflected on her single years and said many people fear being alone. She admitted to torturing herself mentally for two years straight before embracing singlehood. Her plans changed as her relationship with Blanco became serious. To be honest, we can’t be happier for Selena as she embarks on this new journey with Blanco.
