When it comes to royal residences, beauty and grandeur are expected, but some of them hide a darker side. From King Charles’ eerie mansion to Princess Kate’s chilling ghost stories, these grand estates are filled with more than just royal secrets. Over the years, strange sounds and spooky figures have people wondering if some ghostly spirits linger in these big houses. Let’s dive into the details!
We begin with Buckingham Palace, which is supposed to become King Charles and Queen Camila’s primary residence in 2027- the iconic 775-room palace is said to have more than just history within its walls. Paranormal historian Richard Felix spoke to Hello! And revealed that the palace is believed to be haunted by the spirit of a monk and the monarch is not too happy about it. Felix said, “Built on land once belonging to the monks of Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace is home to the ghost of a hooded monk.”
Next, we move to Windsor Castle, the largest occupied Castle in the world. It has been home to many royals past and present, including Queen Elizabeth I, who passed away in 1603, but her presence still remains known. Along with her, King George III, who died in 1820, is also said to live on as a spirit at the Castle, and he has been spotted by witnesses. With Elizabeth I and George III, there are rumours about Henry VIII residing in the Castle.
How can we forget to discuss the Royal Lodge in Windsor? A grand 10-bedroom property currently occupied by Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson. The lodge, which became King Charles’ brother’s residence after signing a 75-year lease after the Queen’s death in 2002, has its own share of spooky storylines. The Queen’s beloved Corgis used to often ‘bark at nothing’ leading her to believe if the late monarch’s ghost was passing by.

Next up on our haunted tour is Sandringham House, famously known for the royal family’s Christmas celebrations. The estate is full of traditions, but it also has an eerie reputation. Several staff workers refused to work in one of the bedrooms as George VI lived there for months before his demise. As per a royal biographer, Kenneth Rose, “Some of the servants had complained that the room was haunted and did not want to work in it.”
As per Richard, Charles was left ‘terrified’ following a spooky encounter elsewhere in the property. It seems Sandringham House may be home to more than just festive cheer—it holds secrets and spectres that linger well beyond the holiday season. Did you know about these haunting facts?
