How Ben Gavin Learned About Derek’s Shocking Exit
During a recent appearance on The TV Cave’s Soap Wire Podcast, Gavin looked back on his time at Beyond the Gates and opened up about the moment he discovered Derek’s story was ending. At the time, he was focused on the clinic storyline involving Eva and Leslie. He believed those storylines were creating new opportunities for Derek and had no reason to think the character was about to be killed off.
Although Gavin knew the plasma ring storyline was happening elsewhere on the show, Derek was not directly involved in it. Because of that, he never expected his character to become one of its victims. Everything changed when executive producer Julie Carruthers called him in for a meeting. Gavin immediately felt that something was wrong and soon found himself asking: “Derek dies, doesn’t he?”
The answer was yes. While the news shocked him at first, Gavin later understood why the writers made that choice. He explained that Derek had always been a good person. He was a firefighter who wanted to help others, a loyal friend, and someone who always tried to do the right thing.
Looking back, Gavin felt that if Derek had to leave the show, dying as a hero was the perfect ending for the character.
The Unfinished Stories Fans Wanted To See In Beyond The Gates
Derek’s death hit viewers hard because many had grown attached to him during the show’s first season. Gavin even joked that fans seemed to realize how much they loved Derek only after he was gone.
