Sean Freeman, the star of Beyond the Gates, shared something very personal that happened to him in his own hometown at an MLK Day event. He posted a part of his keynote speech. Sean Opens Up About Changing His Name
Sean shared a clip explaining that he had made a major decision back in 2027. It was when he legally changed his name. Elsewhere, he was very sure of the path that he was choosing. And he wanted a name that would match the future he imagines. He changed his name from Derek Lashawn Kennedy to Sean Freeman. And it’s because he felt the new name supported the dream he was working towards.
He also spoke about how he chose his first name. It represented faith and the kind of growth he always needed for himself. He then shortened and reshaped his middle name into Sean. It’s because he liked that it carried the meaning “God is gracious.”
He then explained the reason he chose the surname Freeman. He said it came from learning about his ancestors. And many of them selected the name Freename as it was something that marked their new identity. He also wanted to honour that history.
Sean calls them “enslaved” and not “slaves”. It’s because he wants them to be remembered for who they are. And not for the conditions that were forced on them. And every time he introduces himself, it carries a meaning. Furthermore, he shares this story during the MLK Jr. Day event.
