Beyond the Gates star Tamara Tunie has played many memorable roles during her long acting career, but one busy day from years ago still stands out in her mind. The actress recently shared how she managed to work on three different acting projects within just 24 hours.
Her story shows how demanding life as a New York actor could be and why that experience meant so much to her. Dive in for more information.
How Tamara Tunie Worked Three Jobs In One Day
Tamara Tunie, 67, recently appeared on the Soapy podcast and looked back at one of the busiest days of her career. At the time, she was performing in the Broadway play Julius Caesar with Denzel Washington. She was also filming Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Dr. Melinda Warner and As the World Turns as Jessica Griffin.
She explained how the packed schedule began after a Broadway performance. “One of my favorite moments in New York City was, I was starring on Broadway with Denzel Washington in Julius Caesar [on Broadway],” Tunie recounted.

“And so we were in previews and we had our first preview on a Tuesday night, as you do in the theater. And when we finished the preview, Law & Order picked me up from the theater to go and shoot a scene by the river in February. It was so cold. and wrapped that around 3:30 a.m.”
After finishing the late-night shoot, Tunie went home for a short rest before starting another workday. She said, “Then went home, slept for a couple hours, and then had to be at As the World Turns at 7 and because it was Wednesday, finished As the World Turns about noon and went directly back to the theater to do the matinee of Julius Caesar and then the evening performance.”
Why That Day Meant So Much To The Beyond the Gates Actor
Looking back, Tunie said she could hardly believe everything she had managed to fit into one day. She shared, “So in 24 hours, I did three jobs and did one of them three times. And the only place that that can happen is New York City. And that’s when I just felt fully a New York City actor, you know, and that’s the only place you can do that. Yeah, it was great.”
For Tunie, the experience was more than just a busy schedule. It reminded her of the unique opportunities that New York City offers actors. Being able to move from a television set to a Broadway stage and then back again all in one day made her feel proud of her career.

Tunie admitted that she got through those long hours with a mix of excitement and short naps. She said that once she started acting, the tiredness faded away. “Once you get in front of the camera, get out on that stage, you’re just in the world, right?” she said.
She also revealed that she always found a way to get some rest between jobs. “But I had, you know, I had a daybed in my dressing room at As The World Turns. I had my sleeping bag from college tucked under my dressing room at the theater that I would pull out and crawl under there … and just find a place to nap.” Those quick breaks helped her make it through one of the busiest days of her acting career.
