Calum Lill Admits ‘Bittersweet’ Farewell

Actor Calum Lill has revealed his mixed feelings about leaving his role as Joel Deering. In Weatherfield, pressure is mounting on the evil solicitor as his fiancée, Dee-Dee Bailey, almost discovers his truth. Talking about his departure, he said, “I think it’s bittersweet for me.”

He explained that while the storyline is becoming more intense and exciting for him as an actor. However, it also means he will soon be leaving a place filled with people he has grown close to and considers some of his best friends over the past 18 months. He expressed excitement about reaching the climax of the story.

The soap star also shared insights into why Dee-Dee has been drawn in by Joel’s manipulations. He said some people might question how Dee-Dee could have been so blind to Joel’s actions. But his character had hidden everything so well that there was nothing obvious for Dee-Dee to see. 

Lill emphasised that it’s not the victim’s fault when they don’t recognise abuse or manipulation, as Joel had been exceptionally ‘deceitful’ and ‘manipulative.’ Despite this, the ITV star admitted that he enjoys working on the show, and from a selfish perspective, it’s good for him if Joel continues to hide things effectively. 

However, he acknowledged that, in true soap opera fashion, Joel can’t escape the consequences of his actions. The star mentioned that Joel is ready to go further than he ever imagined to protect his secrets. He admitted that the storyline was so dark that he felt scared just reading it.

He concluded his words by saying, “He’ll go to any lengths that he needs to.” One thing is for sure: We can expect an unforgettable exit that will leave fans reeling.
