One of the most disturbing villains of Coronation Street is heading toward his final chapter on the cobbles. Theo Silverton’s cruel treatment of Todd Grimshaw has unsettled viewers for months. And now the ITV soap has confirmed that the character will eventually leave Weatherfield.
Actor James Cartwright is preparing to film the storyline that will bring Theo’s time on the show to an end. However, audiences will continue to see him on screen for some time before the exit unfolds.
Coronation Street Confirms Theo Silverton’s Exit Storyline
Theo Silverton’s departure from Coronation Street has now been confirmed as actor James Cartwright prepares to film the character’s exit storyline. Theo has become one of the most despised figures in Weatherfield after months of tormenting his boyfriend Todd Grimshaw, played by Gareth Pierce.
A spokesperson for the soap explained that Cartwright always knew his role would be temporary. The representative said the actor joined the show on a finite contract and understood the planned length of Theo’s storyline from the beginning. They also confirmed that Cartwright still has scenes to film in the ongoing Todd and Theo storyline. The viewers will continue to see Theo on screen until later this year.
With Theo set to remain part of the show for several more months, fans have already started speculating about how his story might end. Many viewers had hoped the villain would die during the upcoming “whodunnit” storyline, as some believe that would bring dramatic justice. However, since he will stay on screen for a while longer, it raises the possibility that his downfall could come through legal consequences instead.
Theo’s Abuse Of Todd Grimshaw Shocks Viewers
When Theo first arrived in Weatherfield, he appeared to be a troubled but sympathetic character. He had suffered through cruel conversion therapy while struggling with his attraction to Todd, all while having a wife and two children. Even when conversion therapy practitioner Noah Hedley began dating Theo’s ex-wife Danielle, Theo and Todd tried to hold their relationship together during those early challenges.
However, it soon became clear that something darker lay beneath Theo’s troubled past. He began showing hostility toward people close to Todd, particularly Todd’s former partner Billy Mayhew and the flirtatious James Bailey. Theo started manipulating situations. So, Todd would distance himself from anyone he saw as a threat, tightening his control over time.
The manipulation soon turned into disturbing abuse. One of the earliest shocking incidents saw Theo force-feed Todd a kebab, leaving him shaken and traumatised. Later, Theo pretended he would seek therapy and used that promise to move back into Todd’s flat. Once he returned, the abuse escalated as he made cruel remarks about Todd’s body. Later, he disappeared to unsettle him, and forced him into a punishing exercise regime.
Viewers later saw the full extent of Todd’s ordeal in a special single-strand episode told through security cameras. Despite trying to defend himself from another attack, Todd ended up being arrested due to Theo’s manipulation. Billy Mayhew eventually realised what Theo was really like and tried to help Todd escape. But his plan ended in tragedy when Theo ensured Billy had no escape during the Corriedale car pile-up explosion. It led to Billy’s fiery death.
After that devastating event, Theo tightened his control further by deliberately causing Todd to lose his job. He even convinced him to open a joint bank account while only allowing him access to a small allowance. Following Theo’s birthday, the situation reached another disturbing moment when he pulled a knife on Todd. Instead of reacting with fear, Todd begged him to end his suffering.
