Maggie came into Coronation Street with a lot of sharp edges, and viewers noticed it right away. But now, fans are starting to wonder if the soap has changed its plan for her. After all the secrets, family tension, and drama around the Driscolls, Maggie does not seem as cruel as she did at the start.
Fans Think Maggie Has Changed Since Her First Scenes in Coronation Street
The talk started when one fan asked, “Have they changed direction with Maggie?” They also said, “It might just be me, but I think she’s a lot less vindictive compared to when she first started.” The fan then compared Maggie to Evelyn and added, “Evelyn went through a similar thing where was just vile when she was first introduced.”
That made other viewers think about how Corrie often brings in characters who seem awful at first but become easier to understand later. One fan used Bernie as an example and wrote, “I didn’t like Bernie when she first arrived and now she’s a mainstay likeable character. Some characters just need time to get to know and for the actors to settle into the role.”
The same fan also said Maggie may still be annoying, but she is not dull. They added, “Maggie might be annoying and the acting may be…variable…but she’s definitely not boring and for now I’m happy to have her around.” Another viewer agreed that Bernie changed a lot and wrote, “Bernie was a completely different character when she first came into it. Remember her trying to seduce Chesney?”
More fans then talked about Bernie’s big change. One viewer said, “Agree. Bernie was awful and a terrible mum. Now she’ll do anything for Gemma and Kit and the Quads (and Brody!) Now I really like her.” Another fan brought up Becky McDonald and wrote, “Becky McDonald is proberly the best example of this.”
Maggie May Be Getting A Softer Side Now
Some fans think the show may have softened Maggie because her darker story did not go down well with everyone. One viewer said, “They realized the whole “killing your husband you cheated on” thing wasn’t going over well so they gave her a sympathy heart attack and stopped giving her scenes where she’s antagonizing people for no good reason.”
Other viewers feel Maggie has changed because the lies around Ben’s dad have finally come out. One fan wrote, “I think with the weight of the lies off her, and hospital she’s let a lot of the anger out.” Another viewer also thinks this could lead to a proper change for Maggie and said, “I think we‘ll see her redemption now it‘s all come out regarding Ben‘s dad etc.”
Still, not everyone is sold on Maggie yet. One viewer wrote, “They’ve obviously seen all the negative reactions to Maggie and wanted to make her more sympathetic, but she’s just not a good actress so it’s not working.” But the original poster disagreed and replied, “She’s fine in my opinion, what’s wrong with her?”
Another fan explained why Maggie may have felt too harsh at first. They wrote, “I like Maggie to an extent, I do love her snarky comments, but sometimes she’s out and out a bitch! I think they wanted to sort of bring an Evelyn-type character to the front, but Maggie came over too cold for that.” So, while some viewers enjoy her sharp comments, others still think she went too far in the beginning.
