Fans of Coronation Street are still scratching their heads over Mal’s sudden disappearance after the Roy’s Rolls fire drama, and many viewers now believe the soap may not actually be done with the villain yet. While Mal landed himself in serious trouble after getting caught red-handed, several fans think his final scenes felt far too unfinished for the story to truly be over.

Fans Question Whether Mal’s Story Really Ended

Mal’s exit came shortly after he set fire to Roy’s Rolls and attempted to flee the scene, seemingly bringing the dramatic storyline to a quick conclusion. However, many viewers expected the soap to drag the villain arc out much longer, especially after weeks of building up his creepy obsession with Bernie.

One fan on Reddit admitted the ending felt abrupt and questioned whether the character could eventually return. The viewer also pointed out one of the storyline’s strangest moments, writing, “Oh and I forgot about the part in the beginning where he was texting Roy as if he was his wife, what was that supposed to be about?”

CS/ Viewers frustrated over Mal’s arc

Another viewer felt the soap never properly explained Mal’s real purpose in Weatherfield at all. One fan bluntly asked, “What actually was his purpose?” while another added, “What was his purpose? What was the point of the fire? So Roy could get a new train picture? What was the point of the whole obsession with Bernie? Did Mal even have a wife? Another ‘story’ that went nowhere.”

Not everyone wanted the storyline to continue though. One fan argued that Mal had already served his purpose and that the show did not need another long-running villain hanging around the cobbles. The viewer explained, “I don’t think we needed to see anymore of Mal. He was caught red-handed burning down the café so there was no real prospect of him getting off, and his accusations against Kit wouldn’t be treated with much credibility because he’s obviously unhinged.”

Coronation Street Viewers Think Too Many Questions Remain Unanswered

Even with Mal apparently locked up, fans still believe several plot threads remain unresolved. One of the biggest talking points involves his final confrontation with Kit, especially after Mal ominously warned him, “You’re gonna regret this.”

That final line convinced many viewers the writers originally planned something bigger for the character. One fan admitted, “Feels incredibly weird to end the arc there,” while another questioned why the storyline involving Kit allegedly shoving Mal never fully developed afterward.

A few viewers also think the writers missed an opportunity to continue Mal’s disturbing obsession with Bernie even after his arrest. One fan wrote, “Yes, I thought that. I mean he was a crazy stalker, so even while in prison, I thought he’d continue pursuing Bernie e.g letters or creepy phone calls.”

Meanwhile, another theory started circulating online suggesting Mal may not have acted alone at all. One viewer speculated, “I think he and Jodie may have been in on it together, which is why he cooperated with her to get Roy out.” While there is no confirmation the soap plans to revisit that angle, the theory has only added more intrigue around the storyline’s rushed ending.

Several viewers also criticised the way the show handled Bernie’s involvement in the storyline, especially since much of it happened while she was still grieving Paul’s death. Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more Coronation Street spoilers and behind-the-scenes updates.
