Why Fans Thought Carl Was Leaving Coronation Street
Questions over Carl’s future first emerged when he was named as one of five characters who could have been killed off in Coronation Street’s big murder mystery earlier this year. The speculation grew even stronger when Jonathan Howard spoke about Carl in the past tense during a live TV appearance and later announced plans to return to the United States.
When Theo Silverton was eventually revealed as the murder victim, Jonathan admitted that he had intentionally helped keep fans guessing. He also revealed that he had been trying to distract attention from a social media post that appeared to confirm Carl’s survival.
“I do love the soap fans and the soap world,” he told us. “I’m not big into social media, but I have noticed that people are really intrigued to know. People like to guess and they like to find out. So I can have a little fun. I’m under strict instructions not to give anything away. But I have a short-term memory, so I sometimes post things that get me into trouble! So I have to cover that up a little bit…”

Jonathan Howard Has Changed His Original Plans
Although Jonathan originally joined Coronation Street with plans to stay for only a year, he has since changed his mind. The actor recently revealed that he wants to remain on the show longer, particularly because of Debbie Webster’s dementia storyline.
Jonathan believes there is still more story to tell between Carl and Debbie, and he would like to see how that chapter unfolds before considering an exit.
“I think we’d be missing out on something for Carl to leave before he’s come to terms with his mum’s dementia diagnosis. I would at least like to stay until we see what happens to Debbie,” he said. “Then we’ll see what happens after that.”
