Leanne Battersby is finally getting a fresh start in Coronation Street, and a new man could change everything for her. Next week, Idris Nazir arrives in Weatherfield and quickly catches Leanne’s attention after the two meet at Speed Daal. After everything Leanne has gone through with Nick and Toyah, this new romance could give her a reason to smile again.
Idris Quickly Makes A Move On Leanne
Idris Nazir, played by newcomer Junade Khan, arrives on the cobbles next week as Alya Nazir’s cousin. It does not take long for him to notice Leanne when they cross paths at Speed Daal, and the chemistry between them is clear straight away.
Later, Leanne joins Idris for a drink at the Rovers. During their chat, she jokes that opposites can attract because she is known for her fiery temper while Idris seems much calmer and relaxed.
Idris clearly likes Leanne’s personality because he suddenly leans in and kisses her. The unexpected moment leaves Leanne surprised as their new romance officially begins.
Speaking about the storyline, Junade Khan explained why Idris feels such a strong connection with Leanne. He said: “They actually recognise each other from a family wedding where they sat at the same table. The connection is instant. He likes Leanne because she’s ‘real’. He’s used to flashy people, but when he sees Leanne fending off a group of guys who aren’t paying their bill, he sees a strength in her that he admires.”
Idris Sees Strength In Leanne
Junade also shared that Idris feels connected to Leanne because she reminds him of his mother, who raised him on her own. He believes Idris admires Leanne’s strength because it reflects something personal from his own life.
The actor explained: “It reminds him of his own mother, who raised him as a single parent. He sees a strength in Leanne that he probably wishes he’d had in his own life. Working with Jane Danson has been amazing – even on her day off, she came in to meet me. She’s really made this experience special.”
The romance comes at an important time for Leanne, who has struggled to move on from Nick and Toyah’s betrayal. Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks revealed that Idris brings excitement and happiness back into Leanne’s life after months of heartbreak.
Brooks said: “Idris is very charming – the charm oozes out of every pore of this guy! He’s a savvy businessman and he’s got a bit of a ruthless streak. He’s not ready to get his hands even slightly dirty! But he can charm the birds from the trees.”
Idris Could Cause Trouble On The Cobbles
Although Idris charms Leanne very quickly, show bosses have hinted that he also has a tougher side. Kate Brooks teased that Idris is not someone people should underestimate.
She explained: “Idris is a new love interest for Leanne. The attraction is instantaneous. It gives Leanne a new lease of life. She’s been harbouring a deep-rooted resentment towards Toyah and Nick, because that’s the life she had.”
Brooks continued: “But then this guy comes along – he’s got it all and he makes her laugh. He’s funny, he’s a handsome chap and he ruffles a lot of feathers, but he’s not without an edge. He’s not soft and he’s certainly no pushover.”
The producer also hinted that Idris will soon clash with some of Weatherfield’s stronger personalities. She added: “He butts heads with some of our more alpha characters quite early on. We’re really excited about Idris – he’s brilliant.” Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more Coronation Street spoilers and behind-the-scenes updates.
