Coronation Street ended Monday’s episode with a touching tribute to one of its original stars, Alan Rothwell. The actor, who played David Barlow in the ITV soap, passed away last month at the age of 89.
While the episode focused on Daniel Osbourne’s struggles after returning to work, the final moments gave viewers a chance to remember a legendary man from the very beginning.
Coronation Street Pays Tribute To Alan Rothwell
Alan Rothwell’s death was confirmed last month. The actor was best known to the fans for playing David Barlow, the son of Ida and Frank Barlow and brother of Ken Barlow. He appeared in the show’s very first episode when Coronation Street launched in 1960.
After news of his passing was announced, Coronation Street shared a statement on its official X account. The soap paid tribute to the actor and offered condolences to his family.
‘We’re very sorry to hear of Alan Rothwell’s passing and extend our sincerest condolences to his family at this very sad time,’ read a statement.
The show also added: ‘He created an iconic and memorable character in David Barlow and will forever be remembered as one of the original cast members.
The Actor’s Long History With The Soap
The June 1 episode featured a special tribute card after the closing credits. Viewers saw a photograph of Alan Rothwell along with the words: ‘In Memory of Alan Rothwell. 1937-2026’.
Alan was born in Oldham, Lancashire, in 1937. Before and after Coronation Street, he worked on several productions, including playing Jimmy Grange in The Archers. However, his most famous role came when Coronation Street creator Tony Warren cast him as David Barlow in the new soap.
Alan played David for a total of eight years across different periods. He was a regular cast member from December 1960 until June 1961 before leaving the show. David later returned for guest appearances in 1963 and 1964.
