Coronation Street fans may have wondered whether a huge new development near the ITV soap’s set could cause problems. Manchester United has now confirmed plans for its massive new stadium close to where Corrie is filmed.
But soap bosses have made it clear they are not worried about the potential impact. In fact, they are looking forward to what comes next. Scroll down for more information.
Coronation Street Bosses Address Filming Disruption Concerns
Manchester United announced on July 8 that its planned 100,000-seat stadium will sit “approximately 350 metres north-west.” The location places the major new development only a short distance away from the Coronation Street set.
The football club said the stadium forms part of a wider “masterplan” designed to bring more attention and investment. Plans also include “new and improved public transport links, enhanced rail connectivity, and extensive walking and cycling infrastructure” under the Trafford Regeneration Plan.
Naturally, the scale of the project raised questions about whether construction work, matches, and major events could affect Corrie’s filming schedule.
However, a soap spokeswoman told The Mirror that ITV had “consulted closely” with the Trafford Regeneration Plan. Right now, they do not expect serious disruption.
ITV Is Ready To Work Around Major Events
The Corrie spokeswoman explained how the production plans to handle any possible clashes. “As matches and events typically occur on evenings and weekends, we expect operational impact to be minimal and we will schedule filming around any ‘wildcard’ events, just as we do now,” she said. “We welcome this regeneration and are excited to see two iconic British landmarks so close to each other.”
The wider project could also bring major economic benefits. According to Collete Roche, CEO, New Stadium Development at Manchester United, the new build is expected to create 48,000 new jobs and has the potential to generate £7.3 billion per year for the UK economy.
So, while the future around the Corrie set appears positive, life on screen is far more troubled. The Connor-Swain family has been thrown into a frightening situation after Betsy suddenly collapsed and was rushed to hospital this week for reasons that remain unknown.
