CS/ Theo manipulates Todd

‘IT’S NOT LOVE’! Coronation Street Shines Light On LGBT+ Abuse Hell

By Roy

Coronation Street fans have sensed growing tension around Todd Grimshaw’s love life in recent weeks, as subtle changes in his relationship have sparked concern among those watching closely. The storyline has gradually shifted from romance to something far more unsettling, leaving viewers eager to understand what’s really happening behind closed doors.

Todd’s Relationship Takes a Dark Turn

Todd Grimshaw has remained one of the ITV soap’s most recognisable characters since he became Coronation Street’s first openly gay resident back in 2001. Played by Gareth Pierce since 2020, Todd entered a new relationship with Theo Silverton and things initially appeared promising.

However, viewers soon noticed signs that suggested something was wrong. Todd began drifting away from his friends, seemed increasingly withdrawn, and appeared uncomfortable whenever Theo questioned him.

CS/ Cracks in Theo and Todd’s relationship

Fans also watched Theo shame Todd about his body, criticise his eating habits, and accuse him of flirting with other men, behaviour that felt increasingly possessive. Coronation Street has explored unhealthy dynamics and controlling relationships before, but Pierce explained that the latest storyline still feels necessary, especially when told through the perspective of an LGBT+ couple.

Coronation Street Confronts LGBT+ Domestic Abuse On Screen

The show has now confirmed that Todd isn’t simply dealing with jealousy, he is experiencing coercive control and physical abuse at the hands of his partner. What began as possessiveness has escalated into violence, humiliation, and emotional manipulation. Pierce said Theo’s behaviour includes efforts to isolate Todd, dramatic mood swings, and moments of intense affection used to mask previous harm.

CS/ Todd feels trapped

He explained that Todd feels trapped, carrying both pride and shame, and doesn’t want to believe he has been deceived. Pierce also suggested that choosing Todd illustrates that coercive control can happen to anyone, stressing that it stems from calculated manipulation rather than weakness. Pierce said the storyline highlights a very real issue, and he has spoken to people who saw parallels with their own experiences.

Despite progress, Pierce acknowledged that stigma still surrounds male victims of domestic abuse. He said many people continue to view masculinity through a narrow lens, assuming two men should physically fight back, which overlooks the psychological complexity of abusive relationships. As Todd’s storyline continues, viewers may see more discussion around abuse within same-sex relationships.
