Fans of Coronation Street thought they knew everything about Billy Mayhew after more than a decade on screen but it turns out, even the show’s bosses didn’t know the full story. Now, former star Daniel Brocklebank has revealed a surprising hidden talent that left ITV producers completely stunned, and it all came to light in the most unexpected way.
Daniel Brocklebank’s Hidden Talent Left Corrie Bosses Stunned
Daniel Brocklebank, 46, stepped away from Coronation Street earlier this year after spending 11 years playing the much-loved vicar Billy Mayhew. While fans saw him as a steady presence on the cobbles, the actor had already built an impressive career in film, television, and theatre long before joining the ITV soap.
Despite his extensive background, and even training in musical theatre, his co-stars and bosses had no idea he could actually sing. That shocking discovery came when Daniel himself approached the Corrie team about appearing on All Star Musicals.
Recalling the moment, he shared that when the show was being recommissioned, he asked producers if they would consider putting him forward. Their reaction caught him off guard. They told him it was a singing show and asked plainly if he could sing.
Daniel responded that he was classically trained and even played the piano, prompting disbelief. “Why didn’t we know this?” they asked, to which he joked it was because he had been busy playing a northern vicar for years.
A New Chapter After Coronation Street
Daniel went on to perform on All Star Musicals alongside five other contestants, each delivering a musical theatre number. It was the first time many viewers, and industry insiders, realised he was a trained singer. He didn’t just participate; he won the show, marking a huge personal and professional highlight.
Now, the actor is embracing a completely different challenge. He is currently rehearsing for the stage thriller Double Double, where he stars opposite fellow Corrie alum Faye Brooks. Running from April 28 to May 30 at the Barn Theatre, the play takes a darker turn compared to his musical success.
In the two-hander production, Daniel plays Duncan; a homeless and dishevelled man who happens to be the double of Philippa’s late husband, played by Faye. When she discovers him living on the streets, she comes up with a risky plan, as her husband must be alive to claim a multi-million-pound inheritance.
After more than a decade in one role, Daniel shared that what excites him most now is the chance to explore fresh characters again. Stepping away from Billy Mayhew has opened the door to new creative opportunities. Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more Coronation Street spoilers and behind-the-scenes updates.
