A sweet train journey soon turned into a very unusual marriage proposal. Scroll down for more information.

Coronation Street: Maureen Lipman Explains Why She Asked The Big Question

During her This Morning appearance, Lipman spoke about marrying Turner and soon revealed she had been the one to propose. She confirmed, “I did, I did propose to David, yes.”

Lipman explained they were travelling home by train after visiting Edinburgh. The couple had already been together for some time by then. She said, “We’d been going out for a year or so, maybe, or maybe more, I forget.”

Turner then told Lipman about a special day in the Jewish calendar. She recalled, “And he just told me that it was a special day in the Jewish calendar, and it was a bit like Leap Year. It was a day when women could ask men if they would marry them.” Lipman soon decided to put the idea into action.

The Proposal Soon Became Hilariously Chaotic

Lipman did not simply ask Turner while sitting in her seat. Instead, she tried to make the proposal more special during the train journey. She said, “And I just slid under the table, which was not that easy.” A host quickly joked, “I was asking about the proposal, Maureen.” Lipman then explained how she tried to get into position, saying, “I just got on one knee, or both knees, and I said, do you want, will you marry me?”

Turner appeared surprised by the question and asked, “you serious?” Lipman’s reply made the story even funnier as she answered, “I don’t know.” Nothing about the proposal sounded carefully planned, yet its awkward and spontaneous nature made it even more memorable.

Going under the table was only part of Lipman’s adventure. At 79, getting back up proved to be another challenge. She joked, “Anyway, the point was, in, 79, if you’re then someone who, you know, getting on the floor under a table, right? So the only way back is if someone sucks you up.”

Luckily, the unusual proposal ended happily. Romance, as she proved, can remain wonderfully chaotic at any age. Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more Coronation Street spoilers and behind-the-scenes updates.
