The cobbles witness their share of exits, but none like this one. Decades under the spotlight of Coronation Street, a known face exited quietly from a significant plot in silence. Now he is opting to come out, rebuild, and reconnect with his artistic roots personally.
Sudden Exit, Silent Fallout
Sean Wilson, most familiar to Coronation Street viewers as Martin Platt, was set to return to the soap in 2023 as part of Helen Worth’s departure plot. He portrayed Martin from 1985 until 2005, and his return was to be a sentimental send-off for audiences.
But everything changed, and the viewers were left without any explanation. It wasn‘t until November that Sean explained what was happening behind the scenes. He said that he had found himself the target of a police investigation into a 1997 incident. The complaint came from a woman who had connections to the programme.
Was It True?
Sean remembered being summoned to ITV’s Trafford studios, where he was told his contract would be ended. He claimed producers explained that they had to safeguard the cast and could no longer retain him, even though the case remained under investigation. “My whole world was blown apart,” he told an interviewer last year.
Even as he claimed innocence right from the beginning, Sean was stunned. He claimed to have requested to be allowed to explain his version and disprove the allegation, but was informed that nothing could be done once the police were involved. It was, according to him, “total shock“ after having worked intermittently for the program for 21 years.
A New Beginning After Coronation Street
Now, wrapping up Coronation Street for good, Sean revealed what comes next. On X (formerly Twitter), he uploaded a new passion project. “It‘s time to take the leap of faith into a dedicated artist website,” he tweeted, laying out his leap into the world of the creative arts.
Sean invited followers to explore an “eclectic site” with original artwork and photography. “I would love you to drop in and have a peruse,” he added, signing off simply as “S xx”.
His career change isn‘t totally out of line. Sean was the owner of the Saddleworth Cheese Company, demonstrating his passion for crafts and entrepreneurship outside show business. However, this new venture is more personal, more intimate. Sean Wilson is finally reclaiming his life from the shadow of public scandal. We will keep you posted on Soap Opera Daily. Stay tuned!
