Real-Life Patient Battles Systemic Medical Hurdles To Get An Accurate Diagnosis

To encourage young Black women to advocate for their medical well-being, a powerful new health narrative has been developed with a resilient real-life survivor. Well, Denise’s new storyline developed after Mhphango Simwaka was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia at the young age of 24.

EE/Mhphango Simwaka was diagnosed with AML at 24.

The brave survivor explained the difficulty of navigating the healthcare system as a person of colour.  She said, “I know from dealing with health professionals and the NHS for a really long time as a black woman, I have to advocate for myself. It was difficult. I did almost give up but luckily I had great friends and family that kept me going and kept me pushing till I got the answers that I needed.”

Also, to bring authenticity on screen, the production team collaborated with the patient and charity representative Gemma Trout from Blood Cancer UK. And it’s to craft a realistic journey for the iconic character Denise Fox, played by Diane Parish.

The television plot is a vital platform to inform the public about the UK’s third biggest cancer killer. The charity representative said, “AML is a type of blood cancer, so by working with EE we’re raising awareness and understanding around signs and symptoms, but also how the intensive treatment can really affect the patient and the loved ones and everyone around them.”

Elsewhere, as we know, Denise was told that she required an immediate blood and platelet transfusion. Hence, she will spend at least the next month confined to a hospital ward for intense chemotherapy.
