EastEnders Star June Brown Wanted An ASSISTED DEATH, But WHY?

EastEnders legend June Brown reportedly asked former co-star Lord Michael Cashman to help her get an assisted death. The Dot Cotton actor passed away at a great age. Lord Cashman admitted that he was prepared to break the law. He even contacted clinics in the Netherlands and Switzerland to help his friend die with dignity and the death that she wanted. However, his efforts were eventually of no help and Brown passed away at home at the age of 95. 

Cashman’s comments were made during the final stages of the Terminally Ill Adults Bill. Also, it officially fell on Friday after peers ran out of time for discussion. The bill allowed terminally ill adults with fewer than six months to live the right to choose an assisted death. However, it was subject to medical and expert approval.

Now, Lord Michael Cashman has spoken about his late BBC soap co-star June Brown. He revealed that the legendary actress implored him to help her secure an assisted death. The peer also discussed his private efforts to fulfil the wishes of the legendary Dot Cotton actress. 

Also, this revelation is kinda parallel to one of Dot Cotton’s most famous storylines. In that the deeply religious character struggled with her conscience before helping Ethel Skinner die. In fact, Cashman had returned to the soap four years back for Dot’s onscreen funeral. Now, he has disclosed that Brown wanted a similar path in her final years.

June Brown portrayed Dot Cotton for almost three decades. Hence, she is one of the most iconic characters in the British television industry. Elsewhere, Lord Cashman is remembered for the first ‘same-sex’ kiss on a British soap opera as Colin Russell.

However, the former Labour peer had watched his husband of 31 years suffer a slow and agonising death. Hence, he regrets that the legislation did not pass. He says the Parliament failed to fulfil the humane wishes of those who want autonomy at the end of their lives.
