Ash Palmisciano plays the character of Matty Barton in the soap. The character has been a part of many dramatic storylines. Amy was first introduced as a regular female character named Hannah from 2009 to 2012. However, in 2018, he was reintroduced as a trans man. Moira reacted badly to Matty’s revelation and told him to leave. Furthermore, the character was also attacked by homophobic and transphobic individuals.
Meanwhile, after a long on-and-off romantic history, Matty and Amy got engaged. In 2024, the soap aired its first-ever transgender wedding. It allowed Matty to openly share his story and express love to Amy, who accepted him. However, last year Amy passed away in a tragic limo crash.
Elsewhere last year, Ash Palmisciano made an appearance at the Inside Soap Awards. He was asked what he would like to see for Matty’s future after his wife’s death. The soap star had a chat with Inside Soap as part of the magazine’s first-ever Pride issue. He said that he would like Matty to continue with his dream to adopt a child.

The soap star said that the storyline would be powerful as it would show that just because you are LGBTQ+, you can be an incredible parent. Ash thinks that Matty would be a great father. He always had this idea, and he would do it even without Amy.
