An innocent Alf Stewart will finally get tidal vindication next week after a breakthrough roadside discovery exposes the real criminal. However, the initial relief of being cleared failed to heal his psychological wound.
As we know, Roo had doubted him and Alf is unable to process her complete lack of trust. This mystery takes a turn when Justin is called out to inspect a broken-down vehicle on the highway. When he arrives, he is taken aback to find a red ute owned by local driver Carmen. In fact, it perfectly matches the description of the car that struck Abigail.
Elsewhere, one striking detail immediately stood out: the nearside wing mirror was severely damaged. Carmen claims that she simply woke up to find the glass hanging loose after a parking lot incident. But Justin was unconvinced by her claims.
Hence, he pretends to examine the engine while waiting for the motorist to walk away, then contacts David Langham. Credit to him for his quick intervention, the authorities swoop in, and intercept the vehicle. Later, they take the suspect to the station for a formal interrogation.

During the police interview Carmen breaks down and confesses. She admits that she was distracted by a flickering engine light when she accidentally struck Abigail. Well, this breakthrough clears Alf, and a relieved David breaks the news to Alf saying his name is pristine.
Initially, the veteran is happy but he is traumatised by the fact that Roo suspected him of hitting the girl. It reaches a point where he is unable to even look at his child during a tense breakfast.
Later, Roo patronises the pioneer by asking if he plans to sell his vehicle. However, the furious father storms off, completely exhausted from being treated like a useless old fool.
