Kate Middleton gave a rare and emotional update about her cancer journey during a recent visit to a cancer treatment centre.
While speaking with a patient and her family, the Princess of Wales opened up about how cancer affected not only her but also the people closest to her, including her children and parents. Dive in for more information.
Kate Middleton Had A Special Moment At A Cancer Centre
On June 4, Kate visited The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester to support and highlight the importance of cancer care. During the visit, she met Claire Lorente, a breast cancer patient who was celebrating the end of her treatment.
As Lorente prepared to ring the hospital’s bell to mark the occasion, Kate congratulated her warmly. In a video shared by Hello! magazine, the princess hugged her and said, “Well done, you!” She also called it an “amazing day.”
Kate then spoke to Lorente’s partner and reflected on her own experience. She explained that cancer is difficult not only for patients but also for the people around them.
“I know it’s just as hard for families and loved ones,” said Princess Kate. “I know how hard it was for the children and my parents. You go through it with them.” She also greeted Lorente’s baby and smiled as she said, “Isn’t Mummy brave?”
The Royal Family’s Honest Approach During Treatment
Kate’s comments gave a rare look into how her family handled her cancer diagnosis. The Princess of Wales shares Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8, with Prince William. Her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, were also a major source of support throughout her treatment.
In March 2024, Kate announced that she was receiving treatment for cancer after undergoing abdominal surgery. In September 2024, she revealed that she had completed chemotherapy. A few months later, in January 2025, she shared that she was in remission. She has never publicly revealed the type of cancer she had.
Prince William later spoke about how he and Kate chose to be open with their children about what was happening. During an interview in Brazil at the 2025 Earthshot Prize Awards, he explained that they “chose to communicate a lot more with our children.”
“Now, that has its good things and its bad things. Sometimes you feel you’re oversharing with the children you probably shouldn’t,” he said. “But most of the time, hiding stuff from them doesn’t work.” More details about the family’s approach were later shared in royal author Russell Myers’ book William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story.
