King Charles and Queen Camilla will continue with their US state visit despite a shooting incident in Washington, DC. Also, Buckingham Palace announced the decision after ‘high-level’ security discussions across the Atlantic.
Elsewhere, the visit includes major engagements in New York and Virginia with heightened protection. Meanwhile, do you think this visit will successfully strengthen international ties? Keep scrolling to learn more.
King Charles And Queen Camilla’s Security Has Been Tightened
Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles and Queen Camilla’s state visit to the United States will happen as scheduled. Also, the visit will begin today. The decision happened after emergency security reviews after a gunman, Cole Tomas Allen, tried to storm the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night.
However, despite these shocking scenes in Washington, D.C., the King and Queen are still eager to begin their four-day tour. They will be visiting only 48 hours after the Secret Service agents tackled the suspect at the Washington Hilton when he tried to reach President Donald Trump.
The gunman was a former part-time teacher from California. In fact, he was ‘armed’ with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives during the assault. Later, even the King said that he was ‘greatly relieved’ that the President and First Lady were unharmed. However, this incident forced some minor adjustments to the royal itinerary to minimise risk. The acting US Attorney has said the protection for the royal couple will be unprecedented.
Even President Trump has remained steadfast in his respect for the monarch. He told reporters, “He’s a brave man, and he’s a great man.” Elsewhere, the King will also address a joint session of Congress. And later he will visit the 9/11 memorial in New York to ‘honour’ the 67 British victims of the 2001 attacks.
There Will Be A Historic Itinerary Amid Global Tension
Beyond Washington, the royal couple will also travel to Virginia for the “United States Semiquincentennial”. However, Prince Andrew’s shadow will be a talking point. Some US lawmakers have criticised the King for not meeting with the victims of Jeffrey Epstein during the trip.
However, the palace sources have said that the King cannot comment on ongoing police inquiries. In fact, this visit is seen as a royal reset for the King.
