A New Royal Expectation For Princess Lilibet

Prince Harry and Meghan recently celebrated Princess Lilibet’s fifth birthday by sharing a sweet family photo. The young royal has spent most of her life in California, away from the day-to-day traditions of the monarchy.

However, experts say that turning five comes with an important change. If Lilibet reunites with King Charles and Queen Camilla, she would now be expected to follow a long-standing royal custom.

Marlene Eilers Koenig explained the rule to HELLO!. She said, “The only person they will curtsy or bow to is the sovereign. A royal highness does not curtsy to another royal highness.

“Curtseying and bowing is etiquette, nothing to do with precedence. You bow or curtsy the first time you see the sovereign and then again when you leave.” Although Lilibet has not seen her grandfather and step-grandmother for several years, the rule would apply whenever such a meeting takes place.

How Prince And Princesses Learn Their Etiquette

Young royals are often excused from many of the formal duties that adult members of the family must attend. Even so, they start learning royal manners and etiquette from a very young age. For example, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis do not attend state banquets or official dinners with senior royals. During these events, they usually eat their meals separately with their nannies.

This allows them to enjoy a more normal routine while they are still children. At the same time, they slowly learn the rules and customs that come with being part of the Royal Family. Even when children are away from official events, their education in etiquette continues behind the scenes. Nannies and palace staff help teach them how to behave during formal occasions and public appearances.
