Meghan Markle never misses being in the headlines for one reason or the other. Once again, she becomes the talk of the town for leveraging her royal status. The Duchess of Sussex “claimed” the Queen’s nickname for her daughter. Has she gone too far? Dive in to know the whole story about how Lilibet got her name.
Lilibet’s Name Sparks Outrage!
A royal source recently revealed that Meghan Markle allegedly “copyrighted” the name Lilibet even before baby Lili’s arrival. However, that wasn’t even the real kicker. Elizabeth, who earned the nickname “Lilibet” because she couldn’t pronounce her name as a child, wasn’t very thrilled.
According to royal biographer Robert Hardman, the Sussexes lied about getting the Queen’s blessing to use the nickname. The man who authored Charles III: New King, New Court, The Inside Story” recalled Elizabeth being “as angry as I’d ever seen her.” In addition, Hardman claims that although Elizabeth was aware, she was never happy.
Palace insiders state that the Queen may have been unable to flat-out decline his grandson’s request. Yet, sources at the BBC reported that the Sussexes never officially asked the monarch for permission. It’s like they literally invited more gossip and a rare public feud. In no time, Meghan and Harry’s lawyers jumped in.
They sent legal letters to the media challenging this claim as false and defamatory. Furthermore, royal biographer Angela Levin didn’t hold back, calling the whole situation “appalling.” She also suggested that the late Queen was “furious.” Levin alleged the Suits actress had registered the name for official use before Lilibet’s birth.

Meanwhile, Little Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor finally arrived on June 4, 2021, at a hospital in Santa Barbara, California.
