The First Character To Die On Emmerdale Was Never Seen!

However, the first ever death belonged to a character viewers never actually met. In the opening episode of Emmerdale Farm in 1972, Martin Wilks rode her horse past Peggy, who asked Matty who she was. The episode centred on the funeral of patriarch Jacob Sugden. He was the first character to die in the programme’s history. However, Jacob never appeared on screen, so the first death was that of an unseen character.

Jacob was a troubled alcoholic whose business deteriorated. His death started the legacy of one of the original Emmerdale families. Jack Sugden returned to the village and discovered that he had inherited a plane crash storyline. Jack had discovered that he had inherited the family farm. However, Peggy was furious as she believed that the land belonged to her. Then the Sugdens were introduced, led by Annie.
Today, Robert is the only Sugden child of Jack living in the village. Soap fans know Victoria left earlier this year after killing John Sugden, who had a hero complex.
