Jill Halfpenny played the character of Kate Mitchell in the soap. She joined the soap in 2002 and was introduced as an undercover police officer. She was ordered to keep tabs on Phil Mitchell in a honey trap operation. However, Kate Mitchell failed. Then the pair had a wedding the next year. But the marriage didn’t last long.
Then Kate argued with her business partner, Chrissie Watts. She left East London to begin a new life in Brighton in 2005. Elsewhere, Jill Halfpenny has made appearances in other soaps, including Coronation Street and Waterloo Road. The actor opened up about her departure from EastEnders.

The former soap star confessed to the Mirror that her exit from the show was particularly hard to act out. Jill Halfpenny revealed that she was informed that EastEnders weren’t going to renew her contract. She added that she would have done another year. Jill Halfpenny was really disappointed and said that she wasn’t going to sugarcoat that.
She wasn’t ready and would have loved to have stayed. However, they said that they had to let her go. Former soap star rang her agent and confirmed that her role has come to an end. Meanwhile, earlier she told Digital Spy that her time on EastEnders and other soaps had prepared her for her later roles.
She said in 2022 that soaps work so quickly that they can help work when one is on set and under pressure. She added that people don’t appreciate the speed of the soaps.
