Karla previously married NYC lawyer Jeremiah Frei-Pearson. She met him at summer camp and married him in 2011. However, they are no longer together; she divorced him and found new love, John Rogers. In December 2024, she shared a picture of John with the caption that she admires all his versions.
She added that they believe in him and everything he does to make the world a better place to live. In August 2024, John shared she had been away from her family, but the joy in their eyes made her happy. She was grateful for her love as she would hold onto it during the darkest times.

In her college days, she was part of the American version of Hi-5 – an educational show where she taught about stretching, exercising, and fun dancing. In 2008, the actor entered the world of soaps. She joined Guiding Light and then shifted to the CBS daytime soap opera, The Bold and the Beautiful, in 2013. She played the character of a transgender woman, Maya Avant, in the soap.
Though her character created history by becoming the first transgender woman who be married on daytime television, Karla left the soap in 2020. She shared that though she was not ready for the role in the beginning, she wanted someone to tell a story, so she played the role. However, she left it and said she identifies herself as queer not transgender.
